Tibor Gyorgy Kovacs, was born in Kolozsvar, Transylvania in 1964 and has two children. He graduated from the University of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Cluj and received his specialist training in general and thoracic surgery in Budapest, Hungary and obtained a Ph.D degree in experimental surgical oncology from Semmelweis University, Budapest.

Dr. Kovacs received his training in breast cancer surgery and surgical oncology at the National Institute of Oncology from Budapest, followed by further training in breast reconstruction and oncoplastic mentorship at South Manchester University Hospitals and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Breast Units. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Eng.) since 2006 , Fellow of the European Board of Surgery (FEBS) in Surgical Oncology and Breast Surgery.

Between 2005 and 2010, as a Consultant and Lead Clinician at Glan Clwyd Hospital in North Wales, he developed and established a new breast reconstructive service and promoted innovative techniques in breast cancer management (radio guided surgery, dermal flap based breast reconstruction). From these years he achieved excellent clinical outcomes and high patient satisfaction by establishing the Sentinel Node Biopsy technique and offering immediate and delayed reconstructive options (implant based and LD flap reconstructions) for his patients.
In 2013, Mr Kovacs was appointed at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust Breast Unit as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London, specialising in complex oncoplastic breast conservation techniques, immediate breast reconstruction and risk reduction surgery for high familial risk/ BRCA mutation carrier patients.
 
At international level, after serving as Treasurer for several years, Dr. Kovacs was appointed President-Elect of the European Society of Surgical Oncology in 2016 and presided the society between 2018 and 2020. Dr. Kovacs is a regular Examiner in Surgical Oncology and Breast Subspecialty for the European Union of Medical Specialists, and Director and Faculty member on several international Breast Cancer and Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Courses and Masterclasses. Tutor of the ESSO Breast Surgery fellowship program at Guy’s and Associate Editor of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology (2013-1019), most recently he became Chair of BRESO, a European platform on Breast Surgery Certification aimed at promoting accredited specialist surgical care for breast cancer patients.

Dr Kovacs recently took on the role of Medical Director of Breast Health and Chief of Breast Surgery and Surgical Oncology at Jiahui International Hospital, Shanghai (www.jiahui.com/en), China and is serving as Honorary Professor at Fudan University, Shanghai Cancer Center being involved in postgraduate education and training in oncoplastic breast cancer surgery and Advisor for Jiahui Medical Research and Education (www.jmre.org.cn)
