Description of the training programme: The breast surgical oncology training in Marmara University Hospital consists of 3 components; a. theoretical by individual lectures given by all related disciplines under a core curriculum, preoperative and postoperative structured ward rounds, decision-making sessions on both real and scenario-based cases and critical-thinking sessions on difficult cases, b. hands-on practical training by operative skills (on basic/intermediate and advanced level surgery) as well as other technical skills such as physical exam (at outpatients clinic), imaging (mammography / MRI / nuclear medicine; PET and lymphoscintigraphy) readings, breast ultrasound and biopsy practices at radiology suit. The core training is supplemented by participation of weekly 2 MDTs for all cases who had biopsy and separately for all cancer cases for treatment planning, as well as for high risk women (hereditary cancer board) on monthly basis. The trainees are assigned to do site-visits at the pathology unit (for specimen handling, macroscopic assessment, frozen section evaluation etc), radiation oncology suits, ambulatory chemotherapy unit, genetic counseling rooms as well as lymphedema and chronic pain units. Furthermore, the trainees are expected to give presentations during journal club meetings and seminars every other month. Trainees may join a planned or an on-going research/trial if his/her attachment time is reasonably long enough.
Position held by the fellow during the traineeship: A position between resident and consultant for Turkish citizens & Observer for non-Turkish citizens

Maximum number of fellows in the Unit: 2
Optimal duration of the fellowship: 12 months for Turkish citizens as full-time fellowship & 6 months for non-Turkish citizens as observer
Open to both national and international candidates: Current Turkish laws and Turkish Ministry of Health as well as Higher Education Council regulations do not let foreign (non-Turkish) doctors to practice medicine in Turkey. Therefore foreign doctors can only attend the breast unit as an observer. However, the foreign doctors are allowed to scrub, assist and seldom operate under supervision with the discretion of the tutor.
Ideal candidate: With minimum 1 year of basic surgical experience (does not have to be breast-specific) after completing formal residency in general surgery, plastic/reconstructive surgery or gynecology.
