Description of the training programme: The Champalimaud Breast Unit is considered a reference centre in Portugal and abroad, frequently searched for primary and advanced breast cancer treatments and second opinions.
The Breast Unit There are several out-patient clinics during the week, and one multidisciplinary meeting with the presence of all specialties involved in breast cancer care.
Team members are exclusively dedicated to Breast Cancer, both early and advanced settings, with a special emphasis in the treatment of advanced breast cancer, breast cancer during pregnancy, breast cancer in young women and in male patients.
Surgery for Breast Cancer is undertaken by dedicated breast and plastic surgeons; members of the surgical team work together applying the concept of oncoplastic surgery to all patients. Our Unit is considered a Level 3 Oncoplastic Unit, performing more than 50 breast reconstructions/year, using all the available techniques including microsurgery.
Radiotherapy is undertaken under the supervision of dedicated breast radiation oncologists using the most recent techniques and equipment tailored to patient’s needs.
Breast Imaging is provided by dedicated breast radiologists, with all major breast imaging and biopsying techniques available.
Dedicated Breast Nurses provide clinical and psycho-social support to patients.
Position held by the fellow during the traineeship: A position between trainee and resident
The training consist of: Surgical Training, Multidisciplinary participation, consultations according to language of the fellow
Legal requirements: We have fellows from both ESO and ESMO and they don't need any formal registration within the EU. However they are not able to attend surgeries as first surgeon.

Optimal duration of the fellowship: 6 months
Open to both national and international candidates. We offer fellowships to external candidates without payement. We have several cooperations ongoing receiving fellows from ESMO and ESO also (availability always needs to be confirmed)
Ideal candidate: Our ideal candidate can come from any of the root surgical specialties (general; ginecology or plastic) around the 5th-6th year of the residente training or a recente specialist that wants to pursue a breast differentiation. Because we are involved in several academic trials, someone who is also keen on research.
